Thursday 10 October 2019 5.30pm
St Saviour's Primary School Lambeth, London

In John Ruskin’s bicentenary year, year 5 of St Saviour’s School in Lambeth give the premiere of a new musical, written by Paul Ayres, commissioned by the Herne Hill Music Festival. Ruskin grew up a few miles away from the school, and played as a child on the banks of the now-covered over River Effra. As a young man he wrote a children’s story, The King of the Golden River, for Euphemia Chalmers Gray, known as “Effie”. This new work takes inspiration from the Grimm-like tale, with its moral echoes of The Good Samaritan, and celebrates how the local river – and water in general – can be something to be shared, rather than owned.
